On the Saturday after “Move that Bus” day, Diana Ryan and Lucille Rogers of Edenton presented Aaron and Windy Cooper with a quilted wall hanging (called “A Community Joins Together”) they had designed and created for the new Cooper Home. The 12 blocks of the quilt represent different facets of Eastern North Carolina life— houses of different styles, a school, a church, a barn, a lighthouse, and Jamestown’s famous Cypress Grill.

Catching Up with Windy and Aaron Cooper

We had a chance earlier today to chat with Windy and Aaron Cooper post-“Move that Bus” craziness.

This afternoon, Ashley Fiolek, the top-ranked motocross racer in the Women’s Motocross Association, presented Windy with a wagonload of motocross gear: boots, sunglasses, protective gear, and customized race shirts. Windy, who told us when we first met her last week that motocross was her passion, said that she and Ashley plan to go out racing at some point. She said she felt overwhelmed by the house and incredibly blessed by the outpouring of community support: “A burden was lifted off,” she said.

Aaron said he was speechless about this whole 24 hour whirlwind of events— “I’m still trying to think if this is our actual house or not,” he said. The family isn’t moving into the house quite yet, and Aaron told us that he’s just ready to settle into his room. “It’s just like normal,” he said, “but with a change.”

We organized this, but the community built this house.

End-of-the-Build Thoughts: Nina

As a big fan of Elton John and the movie The Lion King, I have been inspired by this quote that a very special volunteer has advised me to remember this week. “Don’t ever take more than you give from the circle of life”.

I believe that I have grown as a person this week just by being an observer of this unbelievable project and cause. The community has come together as a whole to help out in a way that the Cooper family will never forget. The positive atmosphere of the site has brought smiles to the faces of so many in this community and has brought them together so they can lend a hand to rebuild the joy in the lives of the Cooper family.

Partner Spotlight: Ashley Furniture Homestore

No rain clouds can slow down this project! As I pulled up to the site this morning, I saw two giant Ashley Furniture Homestore trucks parked out in front of the house. I was ecstatic when I heard that the Ashley Furniture Homestore had donated over $50,000 worth of merchandise to the Cooper cause. In addition, Ashley Furniture has gone above and beyond the cause to organize three sets of furniture for each room of the house.

I can tell you one thing, the design team will be thrilled to have such a vast selection of furniture choices so they can best fit the personalities and characteristics of the eager family. This top-of-the-line furniture will give this log cabin themed home an even cozier feel. With nearly five rooms awaiting the unique touch of the design team and three distinct sets of furniture designated for each room, rest assured they will find the perfect combination.
