The Battle at Cooper Lane
Battle cries rang out across the build site earlier this morning— and, no, we hadn’t run out of coffee. A group of civil war reenactors, in full military regalia, staged a battle scene reenactment in the cotton field that stands across from the build site— complete with bayonettes, marching commands, and lots of cap-waving. These reenactors spent all last night camped out at the build site in real old-fashioned canvas tents, keeping warm next to a fire and playin old-timey music from the 1860s (a few of them also perform in a group called The Huckleberry Brothers Band). What does music from the 1860s sound like, you ask? Well, I recognized a few songs they were fiddling, including “Oh, Susannah” and “My Darlin’ Clementine”. I spoke with one man from the group who is planning on sewing up a special Civil War military uniform just for Jeff Cooper, because, really, what wardrobe is complete without a jacket with epaulets?
