“Real Men Eat Cupcakes” reads the banner of Carolina Cupcakery Dessert Café outside the VIP tent. The Carolina Cupcakery Dessert Café has been an incredible asset to the Extreme Makeover volunteer experience. Every day, a mother-daughter team from the café travels an hour and a half distance from Chesapeake, Va. to stack and fill a dessert tower with hundreds of cupcakes and other delicious baked goods. With a staff of over 15 workers, they bake the desserts until midnight to arrive early the next morning to deliver them to the set of Extreme Makeover in Jamesville, NC.
As a big cupcake fan (or you could call me a cupcake connoisseur), I can honestly say that these are not your typical cupcakes. With unique and exotic flavors ranging from key lime pie to pink lemonade and dark chocolate filled with Baileys liqour, they are exceptional to the “cupcake” rule. Yesterday, my friend Matt brought a plate over to the crowd of spectators, and the cupcakes were attacked in a minute’s time.
My personal favorite is the Reese’s cupcake, because of the mouth-watering peanut butter frosting that melts in my mouth. I watched with wonder today as a little girl picked out her favorite flavor and ate the entire thing in one bite! After they deliver the cupcakes to the tent, the mother-daughter team volunteer wherever they are needed on the site. They work until it’s time to head home to Chesapeake to bake the next batch for tommorrow.
As the day goes on, I watch with fear as the cupcakes disappear from the tower, and my smile fades. But I am not discouraged, because I know that the tower will be filled again tommorrow.
