Move that Bus, Martin County Transit!

When Marvin Chambers moved from Asheville to Williamston, NC six years ago, he never expected an opportunity like this. Chambers, an employee for the Martin County Transit, had grown accustomed to the day-to-day activities of transporting the elderly and others in need. Therefore, when county manager Russell Overman contacted MCT with the assignment of transporting spectators and volunteers for his favorite show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Chambers was ecstatic.

In the five-day period leading up to the reveal today, Chambers and his MCT team have transported nearly 6,000 volunteers and spectators from the DFI warehouse to the build site. The short ride is not short on hospitality, though. Chambers reflected on what it was like to drive around disabled veterans and humbled spectators. I will always remember the unique opportunity I had to speak with Jeff Cooper’s high school math teacher on one of my shuttle bus trips. The conversation reminded me of the history and ties of the community of Jamesville, as well as Martin County, which have been evident throughout the week. As Chambers elaborated, this build is not simply about the deserving Cooper family but about the deserving community as a whole. I could not say it better myself.
